Sperre Pleat Cooler
The solution to the seawater cooling problem
The seawater cooling problem
  • Seawater is a very stable and reliable cooling source in marine cooling
  • Seawater quickly leads to fouling of the cooling system
  • Seawater presents major cleaning challenges

The solution to the seawater problem
Sperre Pleat coolers
  • No lack of cooling capacity in critical situations
  • Replace elements within minutes
  • Clean cooler within an hour
  • Maintenance cost reduced by 90%
  • No need for expensive service personnel
Performance like a plate cooler
Features like a plate heat exchanger
  • Performance just as good as for conventional plate heat exchangers in terms of heat transfer and pressure drop
  • The same potential for leakage control and detection as an in-line seawater filter
  • The principles of the framework, dimensions and port positions are harmonized with the standards for plate coolers
  • Easy to replace a plate cooler with a Sperre Pleat cooler
Open element - easy handling
  • Consists of a small number of robust elements
  • Lightweight elements with handles are designed for easy handling
  • Can easily be cleaned with a high-pressure spray
  • Dismantling is not needed.
  • Reduces gaskets and replacement parts to a minimum
  • No need for expensive expertise to perform maintenance
  • Ensures on-going operation for the vessel
Easy to replace elements
  • One Sperre Pleat cooling element replaces about 15 to 20 plates in a conventional plate cooler
  • Simplifies the maintenance operation from individual cleaning and probably gasket replacement for 15 to 20 plates
  • Single high-pressure wash of one element
  • Easy to replace elements as needed
Cleaning time reduced from 8 hours to 1
  • A day's work for one or two people for maintenance of a medium-sized plate cooler
  • With Sperre Pleat technology, the job takes less than an hour for one person
  • Requires no special qualifications
Simplicity

High efficiency

  • Maintenance involves dismantling, high-pressure cleaning, and assembly of a few robust elements that are very easy to get watertight again
  • Requires no special qualifications

Sealed at first attempt
  • Leakage following the assembly of conventional plate coolers is a well-known problem
  • With old and worn gaskets, ever greater pressure between the plates is needed to prevent leaks
  • This problem is eliminated in a Sperre Pleat cooler because the sealing pressure between the robust cooling elements is ideal when the surfaces of the frames are in contact with each other

Competitive cost
  • Less use of expensive Titanium

  • More use of inexpensive composite for internal functions

  •  Consists only of Titanium plates, gaskets and end plates
  • Titanium used for all internal functions
Pre-pressed titanium sheet
  • The basic design of the technology involves transferring heat between two fluids, separated by a thin titanium layer
  • To achieve a very large surface within a minimal volume, the titanium sheet is pleated into one element
Pleated titanium
  • The element consists of pleated titanium in which the gap between the wall of each pocket forms the channels for the flow
  • The titanium element is embossed with a pattern that increases the strength and the efficiency of the cooler
550 cm titanium folded to 25 cm
  • The pleated titanium element is the core of the Pleat technology, and forms the starting point for refinement as a marine cooler
Robust end sealing with leakage control
  • After pleating and embossing, the titanium element is sealed at the ends
  • To achieve this, the element is lowered into special casting moulds, and a permanent sealing compound is applied
Frames
  • The sealed elements are placed in frames that contribute physical strength and ensure all the necessary distribution of fluid
  • The sealed titanium element is mounted between two frame halves with specially designed gaskets
Designed for easy maintenance
  • One Sperre Pleat cooling element replaces about 15 to 20 plates in a conventional plate cooler
Few elements
  • 4 elements and 5 gaskets in a Sperre Pleat cooler (left) replace 60 plates and the corresponding number of gaskets in a plate cooler (right)
Easy assembly - easy split
  • Features like a plate heat exchangers
  • Unique maintenance friendliness
  • Easy to change or alternate cooling elements
