The Sperre Rack cooler calculator



Sperre has developed the Sperre Rack cooler calculator to help technical personnel to optimize their cooling needs based on the Sperre Rack central cooler, designed especially for offshore vessels. The calculator is now available on www.sperre.com/rack/calc

The Sperre Rack cooler is a heat exchanger system made for central cooling. It is a module based system, and can easily be configured for different number of elements, serial- or parallel connections and different number of flows through the cooler. Sperre has developed a calculator to help the ship designers and other technical personnel to find the needed number of elements and test different solutions and combinations of cooling.

By filling in the required capacities, the ship designer will get an optimized calculation for the vessels cooling needs.
In the calculator the users first of all must fill inn some dimensions from the ship design. The frame distance and tank top height from the actual ship gives the dimensions of the cooling elements. The system can be configured for one or three pass of the seawater (SW). The actual effects and temperatures decide that gives the best result, but the easiest way is just to try both and see what gives the best result. The seawater (SW) in and out design temperatures must be filled in. Normal numbers here are 32 degrees in, and often max 45 degrees out.

The cooling effect can be filled in for each circuit (split system) or it can be summarized into one circuit (mixed system). The calculator can handle up to four systems for each Sperre Rack cooler. The fresh water (FW) in and out temperatures for each system must be filled in.
When all the fields are filled in, the user can push the Calculate-button. The result gives how many elements that are needed, the actual fouling and the required flow for seawater (SW) and fresh water (FW). It also gives the velocity and the recommended flange connections.
